Semi-automatic hand guns should be banned
MEDIA RELEASE â AUSTRALIAN GREENS
Semi-automatic hand guns should be banned: Greens
Australian Greens Leader Christine Milne has called on the Prime Minister to tighten Australian gun control laws following the Newtown massacre in the United States.
“The Prime Minister needs to finish the job John Howard began after Port Arthur,” Senator Milne said.
Following tri-partisan cooperation led by the Greens in Tasmania, John Howard helped ban semi-automatic rifles. However semi-automatic hand guns remained.
“Hands guns like the ones reported to be carried by the shooter in Newtown, Connecticut, are available in Australia.
“There is now a huge proliferation of hand guns across Australia and they account for at least half of all gun related deaths homicides in Australia.
“Our gun control laws have reduced firearm deaths in Australia, but we can’t rest on our laurels. We should be banning semi-automatic hand guns in Australia.
“The Prime Minister should get State Premiers around the table and ban these weapons next year.”
