100 DAYS TO GO: Carbon Tax and means test of private health insurance rebate

March 23, 2012

Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said local householders and small business need to brace themselves for the impact of the carbon tax and the changes to the private health insurance rebate which will both commence in 100 days.

In exactly 100 days, North Coast residents will start paying more for electricity, the essentials of life and for private health insurance , Mr Hartsuyker said.† The carbon tax and the changes to the private health insurance rebate will put great pressure on household budgets.† Julia Gillard promised there will be no carbon tax under the government I lead and also promised she would not touch the private health insurance rebate she broke her word to North Coast householders on both issues.

Mr Hartsuyker said he was very concerned about the increases in electricity prices that are coming from 1 July.† The Gillard Government is adding the world s biggest carbon tax to the world s highest electricity prices.† Household electricity prices have already increased by 40% in real terms since 2007 and will go up by at least another 10 per cent in the first year of the carbon tax.

Mr Hartsuyker said the changes to the private health insurance rebate will also harm household budgets.† Private health insurance policy holders will pay up to $1,000 more per annum for private health insurance under the Government s means test.† It will also put more pressure on the local hospital system as an estimated 1.6 million people drop their private hospital cover and another 4.3 million Australians downgrade their coverage over coming years. As millions of people leave private health insurance, the cost of that insurance will rise and put further pressure on our public hospital system.† This will increase premiums significantly for everyone, even those that don t lose the rebate.† Hospital waiting lists will also grow as an estimated 845,000 new procedures are forced onto the public hospitals system.

Mr Hartsuyker said the Coalition has a plan to assist household budgets by making the repeal of the carbon tax the first order of business and by removing the means test on the private health insurance rebate as soon as we can.
