Illawarra jobs package fails to deliver

It has been revealed today that the $30 million dollar Illawarra Region Innovation and Investment Fund is failing to even come close to generating the 470 jobs that were promised.

Twenty million dollars of the fund were contributed by the Gillard Labor government.

“In reality, the announcement of this funding was yet another panicked scramble to patch up the damage to investor confidence created by the announcement of the carbon tax last year,” said Sophie Mirabella, Shadow Minister for Industry, today.

“Now we see that only 66 of the 470 jobs have been delivered. This represents over $450,000 per job so far.

“This government has been scrambling to fix the damage to industry and jobs from the moment its toxic carbon tax was announced. In that time, there has been roughly one job lost in manufacturing every twenty minutes.

“If Labor was serious about generating productivity and ensuring the future of Australian industry, then it would get rid of the carbon tax immediately,” Mrs Mirabella concluded.
