The Australian mistakes gossip for scrutiny again on Greens policy

12 November 2012

Whatever document the Australian has ‘obtained’ for its front page report today, it is certainly not the final draft Australian Greens education policy that was negotiated at the Greens National Conference the weekend before last.

Embarrassingly for The Australian, the real final draft, as circulated to members, was in fact released publicly to all media a week ago. A simple fact check would have revealed that fundamental error.

“Once again, The Australian mistakes idle gossip-mongering without fact-checking for ‘scrutiny’ of the Greens,” Australian Greens Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

“The Greens have indeed updated our education policy, strongly reaffirming our support for a properly and fairly funded public education system and backing the Gonski proposals, but The Australian’s story is riddled with errors.

“The Greens are absolutely committed to the principle that all children should have access to high quality schools, regardless of how much money their parents have or where they live, and our policy clearly reflects that.”

The education policy circulated to media last Monday is attached again.
