Robert Oakeshott

Independent Member of the House of Representatives for the Division of Lyne in New South Wales

Saturday, 3 November 2012

In response to a growing number of inquiries about Mr Phil Coorey’s article in today’s Fairfax Media, please find below a short statement from Rob, who will be unavailable for further comment for the remainder of the weekend.

“I received defamation papers from the Minister for Resources and Energy, Martin Ferguson last Thursday.

“The article which caused offence to the Minister was titled ‘Greens, MP want mining tax toughened’. It was published on 26 October 2012 and the only direct quote attributed to me is in the final paragraph of the article. It states: ‘we must have another look at it’.

“I am very surprised the Minister has threatened legal action over this matter.

“I do not know whether this action was encouraged or approved by other members of the Cabinet or the Caucus - these are questions for others.

“The only action I have taken in response to the letter from the Minister’s solicitors is to ask Mr Ferguson in person if the letter is authentic and if he authorised it.

“He confirmed both.”
