TRIBUNAL ENDORSEMENT FOR NEW DISPENSING FEE

3 V v a j

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia has secured a 15 cent increase in the dispensing fee paid by the Commonwealth to its 4,500 members.

Guild president Mr Colin Johns announced today the Pharmaceutical Benefits Remuneration Tribunal had ratified an increase - from to $a.y8 - in the dispensing fee for each prescription.

Mr Johns stressed that while the change would ensure that pharmacists received a fair payment for dispensing prescriptions it would not affect the cost to consumers.

"People going to their local pharmacy will notice no difference in charges," he said. "The increase simply reflects additional labour costs which have been experienced by every pharmacy in the country.

"It falls within the terms of the Agreement on Pharmacy Remuneration between the Pharmacy Guild and the Federal Government which we negotiated in 1990. The Agreement contains a formula for the adjustment of the dispensing fee to help ensure that pharmacists are compensated for increases in labour costs."

Mr Johns said the Guild's agreement with the Federal Government had brought stability to the industry and helped pharmacists to undertake sound financial planning.

He said pharmacists would be able to claim the increased dispensing fee from the Commonwealth starting on 1 July.

"Guild members have adopted a progressive attitude towards wage rate movements and the 1989 decision by the federal Industrial Relations Commission on improved career paths for employees," he added.

"In line with the Commission's decision, they have fostered classification structures which enable employees to pursue higher paid positions and more satisfying work."
