The State Opposition today called on the Kennett Government to keep Victorian lighthouses in public hands.

The Shadow Minister for the Environment, Mr Barry Pullen, said there was a danger the Kennett Government would take advantage o f the impending transfer of ownership o f lighthouses from the Commonwealth to Victoria.

“The Federal Government is set to transfer the ownership o f the lighthouses to Victoria, a move which I welcome,” Mr Pullen said,

“The concern is that once the lighthouses are handed over they will be in the hands o f the Conservation and Environment Minister, Mr Birr ell - the same man who hands out 99 year leases o f public land like confetti.

“Now M r Birr ell is planning to lease out the historic lighthouse keeper’s cottages to the private sector so that they can be converted into backpacker accommodation.

“This would put at risk the conservation and heritage conditions that must be applied to these historic properties.

“Leasing out public properties for 99 years is virtually the same as privatisation. The end result is that public properties are locked away from ordinary Victorians for generations.”

Mr Pullen said State Parliament’s all-party Environment and Natural Resources Committee had found that disposal o f the lighthouses to private interests would be “highly undesirable”.

“The Committee said that handing over the lighthouses to private operators could result in inappropriate development and damage to the lighthouses’ heritage and natural values,” M r Pullen said.

“In his rush to make a quick dollar, M r Birrell is putting our historic coastline at risk.”
