NEW MINISTER MEANS QUIETER SKIES, SAY PILOTS fit — /JS c aJ /3 tr

Australia’s largest aviation lobby group, AOPA (the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association), today praised the appointment of John Sharp as Minister for Aviation. "It will be a pleasant change dealing with a minister who can fly", said Senior Vice-President Boyd Munro. "Mr Sharp will deliver quieter skies for Sydney, and a safer, more viable aviation industry for the whole of Australia."

"Being a pilot, Mr Sharp can see the Sydney airport noise problem for the unnecessary, politically motivated mess it is. The reopening of the east-west runway and the reintroduction of sensible flight paths will clean up this mess. The noise that needlessly afflicts

Sydney residents will be slashed, as will the equally unnecessary delays faced by air travellers. "We are confident Mr Sharp can deliver the Coalition’s other important promises. One of the most important of these is the appointment of new board members for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Incredible as it may seem, the majority of the CASA board

have no aviation experience at all, and the entire board has consistently refused to answer pilots’ questions. When one of our members personally delivered a letter, the present Chairm an tore it up in front of him!

"We believe the appointment of Mr Sharp marks the end of this adversarial, contemptuous approach, and the start of an era of cooperation and success."
