MINISTER PRESENTS UNITED NATIONS POSTCARD PRIZES -

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Gareth Evans, will present awards to primary, school-aged winners of a national postcard design competition at Parliament House on Monday, October 16.

State winners of the "Wall of Peace" postcard competition, aged from 6 to 13, will receive their prizes at 10:45 am in the Mural Hall.

The competition, part of the United Nation's 50th Anniversary celebrations, encouraged primary school children to create postcards drawing on their ideas and impressions of the UN.

The event attracted nearly 3000 entries from across the country.

Organisers said they had been overwhelmed by the response and were particularly pleased at the success in reaching such a young audience. ยท

The competition was open to all primary school students including those from the School of the Air. Organisers said this ensured the broadest possible participation, as well as attracting an entry from six year-old Dan Murray, of the Katherine School of the Air, which won the Northern Territory award.

Goldstar, a global sponsor of the United Nations' 50th Anniversary^ has also supported this competition as an Australian initiative.
