NEWS RELEASE DPR 2 2 /9 5 Friday March 24, 1995

The Department of Defence announced today that it has signed a contract with QANTAS for the supply of travel agency services to the Department. ---------

Under the tenms of the contract, QANTAS will act as a travel agent for Defence, and provide various travel services including “Best Fare” on both domestic and international airlines.

The concept of “Best Fare” relates to QANTAS’ role as Defence’s travel agent and reflects the fact that QANTAS when booking travel for the Department will find and book the best fare available in the travel industry.

The contract is valued at aproximately $75 million per annum and will begin in May for a period of three years, with a possible extension to five years.

The Department selected QANTAS as the preferred source of supply after an exhaustive and highly competitive evaluation of responses from a number of companies in the travel industry.

Air Vice Marshal Don Tidd, Assistant Chief of the Defence Force for Logistics said, “The QANTAS tender was selected on a commercial basis as offering the best value for money for Defence.

Previously Defence's travel arrangements have involved separate contracts for domestic and international travel. The new contract covers travel both within Australia and overseas, and reflects Defence’s preference for a single source of supply for all travel service.”

The contract was signed in Canberra by the Deputy Secretary for Acquisition and Logistics, Mr Garry Jones, and the QANTAS Group Executive General Manager Commercial, Mr Geoff Dixon.
