Australia House, the country's showcase in central London will be refurbished at a cost of $14 million Federal Parliament was told today.

Member for Throsby, Colin Hollis, Chair of the Public Works Committee, in tabling his Committee's report today/said that Australia House is Australia's oldest overseas mission and a London landmark classified by English heritage.

Mr Hollis told Parliament the building was constructed between 1913-18 and used substantial amounts of Australian timbers and marble. It is the oldest originally occupied Chancery of any foreign mission in London, Mr Hollis said.

While the Committee has recommended that the project proceed Mr Hollis said that the Committee has also recommended that the 6th floor which will be substantially vacant following the refurbishment should be converted for use as transit accommodation or office accommodation.
