Winegrape production to exceed 1 million tonnes by 1999-2000

‘By 1999-2000, winegrape production is projected to exceed 1 million tonnes,’ ABARE’s Acting Executive Director, Dr Stephen Beare, said today when releasing Projections o f Winegrape Production and Winery Intake to 1999-2000.

The report contains estimates of the 1996-97 harvest and projections of winegrape production for the three years to 1999-2000, on a varietal and regional basis. Estimates of total winegrape intake by wineries, over the same period, are also presented.

Dr Beare also stated that ‘between 1997-98 and 1999-2000, winemakers plan to increase their intake of winegrapes by about 20 per cent. And, for the first time since ABARE began the intake survey, winemakers have signalled their intention to take in more red grapes than white in the projections period’.

The major portion of the growth in planned intake by winemakers is expected to be premium winegrapes, while a decline in intake is expected for white nonpremium and multipurpose grapes. Winemakers had indicated that the biggest increases in the tonnages they plan to

crush by 1999-2000 would be for the shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and semilion varieties.

Growers are also responding to market needs. According to Dr Beare, ‘premium winegrape varieties are projected to drive the increase in winegrape production between 1997-98 and 1999-2000’.
