WORK FOR DOLE A SHAM AND SHAMBLES

Young unemployed people want real jobs schemes which provide them with the training, skills and self-confidence to go on and get real employment, Martin Ferguson, the Shadow Minister for Employment, Training, Population and Immigration, said today.

“ The work-for-the-dole scheme is a contentless sham invented by the Prime Minister when he was in a jam, under strong community criticism for a do-nothing attitude to the unemployed,” Mr Ferguson said

“ The Prime Minister hoped to con people into thinking - especially voters in sensitive, marginal, rural electorates - that he was doing something about the jobless.

“ The sham and the shambles o f the scheme is now evident.

“ The Government is now hinting that they will also tell the middle-aged unemployed that they too will have to compulsorily join the work-for-the- dole schemes,

“ Before this scheme is extended any further a truly independent assessment o f the value o f work-for-the-dole needs to be undertaken - and it should be compared with the value o f the Green Corps scheme.

“ At the moment the Coalition Government’s work-for-the-dole scheme targets the young unemployed - and gives them no training, no skills.

“ The Government’s Green Corps programs does similar work but targets young people at university, at TAPE college or already in work - and gives them a structured program o f training, skills acquisition and confidence building. And provides extra financial incentives.

“ Green Corps was modelled on Labor’s Landcare Environment Action Program (LEAP) but Labor’s LEAP was available only for those who really needed the Government’s help - the young unemployed.”

“ An independent assessor would , we believe, strongly recommend that work-for-the-dole be radically altered or Green Corps should be made a scheme for only the unemployed
