Democrats reject proposal to force dole repayment

The Australian Democrats have rejected calls by the Shadow Minister for Education, Mark Latham MP, that the newly employed should repay their dole.

The Democrats have categorically ruled out consideration policies which hit hardest the poor and traditionally disadvantaged in our community.

“Particularly disappointing is the Shadow Minister for Education’s unwillingness to rule out fees and charges for education. Instead, he has embraced HECS and has mooted extending this scheme to the social security system,” said the Democrats’ Employment and Higher Education spokesperson, Senator Natasha Stott Despoja.

“The Democrats await the Shadow Minister’s forecast for Higher Education under a Labor Government but from early reports, it seems to involve HECS, deregulation and vouchers,” concluded Senator Stott Despoja.
