REWARDING INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT

The Commonwealth M inister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, Alex Somlyay, today encouraged local governments from across Australia to show the world their resourcefulness and creativitiy.

Speaking at the launch o f the 1998 National Awards for Innovation in Local Government, M r Somlyay said the annual Awards prove an inspiration for councils to adopt innovative ideas and practices.

"All levels o f government are having to address and cope with changing technology and community expectations in an environment o f structural change. Innovation is vital if we are to meet these challenges," M r Somlyay said.

"These Awards raise awareness o f the benefits that can be realised by considering and adopting alternative and 'smarter' ways o f delivering outcomes and service."

Now in their eleventh year, the National Awards for Innovation in Local Government are another way in which the Commonwealth seeks to encourage and recognise the valuable work being done at the local level.

M r Somlyay said the Awards have great potential to improve local government practices, and to provide benefits to other local government bodies."

Winners o f the 1998 Awards will be announced at the Australian Local Government Association's National General Assembly in November.

The Awards, an initiative o f the Commonwealth Government managed by the National Office o f Local Government, are endorsed by the Institute o f Municipal Management and the Australian Local Government Association, which represent over 700 local councils and over 25,000 key decision makers employed in the local government sector.
