NO CLOSURE OF REGIONAL AND BUSH POST OFFICES

The Federal M inister for Regional Development, Alex Somlyay, said today's Federal Government decision on postal deregulation is wonderful news for the security o f vital postal services for rural and regional Australia.

"The National Competition Council set up by Labor in 1995 released a report reviewing Australia Post operations. During its term in office Labor closed 277 Australia Post outlets," Mr Somlyay said.

The Coalition Government through the M inister for Communications, Senator Richard Alston, has delivered a very sensible and considered response to the NCC recommendations which will increase choice and reduce costs for consumers, while guaranteeing no reduction in the standard o f postal services.

"The announcement delivers a number o f vital service guarantees to the public from the Howard Government. We are committed to give all Australians access to the world's best postal service at the best possible price with no reduction in service," M r Somlyay said.

These key Coalition commitments guarantee the bright future for postal services:

• Australia Post will remain 100% government owned; • No regional post office or mail centre will close as a result o f this government response to the NCC; • Australia Post will continue vital subsidies to 700 regional Licensed Post Offices; • The standard letter rate will remain uniform for all Australians; • The standard letter rate will be frozen at 45 cents until at least 1 January 2003; • And current concessions for delivering educational material to isolated children will be maintained.
