The Federal Local Government Minister, Alex Somlyay, has announced that the Commonwealth will provide $41.5 million in financial assistance grants to the 29 Tasmanian councils in 1998-99.

Details of the allocations are attached.

"Nationally, the Federal Government will pay almost $1.23 billion in financial assistance grants to local government in 1998-99. Tasmania now receives 3.4 per cent o f the national total," M r Somlyay said.

"All these grants are untied. This means they can be used by the receiving councils according to their local priorities.

"The Government is aware o f the importance o f the financial assistance grants to councils, particularly for councils in rural and regional Australia. With this in mind, the Federal Government has reinstated funding to councils for 1998-99 on a real per capita basis, i.e. for both inflation and population growth. The Government also intends to maintain this real per capita level o f funding for future years, thus providing a level o f certainty in funding to local government in Australia," he said.

"In Tasmania, around 90 per cent o f these grants will go to rural and regional councils."

The grants to individual councils were recommended by the Tasmanian State Grants Commission, an independent body established for the purpose o f determining the distribution o f the grants to councils in the first quarterly payment to be made as soon as possible.
