1998/99 BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO UPGRADE

JERVIS BAY TERRITORY WATER SUPPLY

The Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, Alex SajfjJyay, announced today that the Commonwealth will provide $4.3 million over the next 2 financial years to upgrade the water supply in the Jervis Bay Territory.

“The Howard Government is again affirming its commitment to quality service delivery in the Territories,” Mr Somlyay said.

“This particular new infrastructure project will address the community concerns over the present water supply system.”

“Water for domestic use in the Territory is currently drawn from Lake Windermere, which has been depleting for the last 7 years. Residents of the Territory have been subjected to water restrictions for some time, and are understandably anxious about the reliability of the current supply.”

Work on the project is expected to commence in the 1998/99 financial year.

Ends 12 May
