RURAL MOBILE UPGRADE WELCOMED - BUT TEST LAYS IN REGIONAL PACKAGE

President of the Australian Local Government A ssociation. Cr John Campbell, today welcomed the announcement by the Federal Government that mobile telephone coverage in regional and rural Australia will be extended through new technology.

However, Cr Campbell said that the real test of commitment to regional and rural Australia would be in the package of measures to be announced by the - Government tomorrow.

“Telecommunications are a vital lifeline for the bush - but are only part of the larger regional development equation,” said Cr Campbell.

“The Federal Government has an important role in ensuring telecommunications services to the bush are up-to-date, accessible and affordable.

“But it is important that other aspects of the regional development equation are not left out.

“It is important that any regional development strategy emerging out of the full sale of Telstra provides long term hope for regional Australia.

“That means linking national telecommunication, infrastructure, and service provision with local decision making.
