ALP SUPPORT FOR SEXUALITY BILL WELCOMED

The Australian Council for Lesbian and Gay Rights has welcomed ALP support for a national Sexuality Discrimination Act.

Speaking in the Senate this afternoon, Shadow Attorney- General, Nick Bolkus, said the ALP will vote for a Democrats Bill prohibiting discrimination on the grounds of sexuality and gender identity.

ACLGR spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said that the ALP should be commended for supporting the Bill.

“This legislation is the next logical step in the development of Australian human rights law”, Mr Croome said.

“ALP support for this Bill will ensure its passage through the Senate and places increased pressure on the Government to formulate its position on the legislation.”

At a human rights forum in Parliament House this morning, Attorney-General, Daryl Williams, said that the Government has not yet developed a view on the Democrats’Bill.

“The Government has had ample time to consider its position on this Bill and should come clean about where it stands”, Mr Croome said.
