MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER

FA94 14 July 1998

TRAVEL FACILITATION AGREEMENT WITH FRANCE

I am happy to announce the conclusion of an important agreement with France which allows Australian and French citizens to enter each other’s country for visits of up to three months without a visa.

The agreement will be signed tomorrow and enter into force provisionally on 1 August.

The streamlined access will benefit some 200,000 Australians who visit France and its overseas territories of New Caledonia and French Polynesia on holidays or business each year.

This means that Australians can now travel to all European Union countries without the need for a visa.

There has been strong growth in the number of French tourist and business visitors to Australia in the past two years, the new arrangements should serve to maintain this pleasing trend. The conclusion of the agreement is further evidence of the excellent state of the

bilateral relationship with France.
