M E D IA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER

Λ».AUSTRALIA

FA 146 1 December 1998

APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN OF AUSTRALIA-INDONESIA INSTITUTE

I announce today the appointment of Mr John Reid AO as the new Chairman of the Austral ia- Indonesia Institute (ΑΠ). Mr Reid succeeds Mr Richard Woolcott AO who completed six years as Chairman of the ΑΠ last August.

I would like to pay tribute to the outstanding contribution to Australian-Indonesian relations Mr Woolcott has made over many years and especially with the Institute.

Mr Reid’s appointment will enable the ΑΠ to continue to build upon its very solid achievements. I mention, in particular, the establishment of an innovative civil society development program, which has ensured that the ΑΠ remains relevant to the changing situation in Indonesia.

The Government places great importance on people-to-people links between Indonesia and Australia. At the end of the day these links are the bedrock of the bilateral relationship.

Mr Reid has had a distinguished career in business and an outstanding record of community service. He is Chairman of the Australian Graduate School of Management, former Chairman of James Hardie Industries Limited and a former Non-Executive Director of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP).

He will serve as Chairman of the ΑΠ on a part-time basis for three years.

Other members of the Board are Mr Paul Kelly, Professor Richard Robison, Mr Geoffrey Forrester, Mr Rawdon Dalrymple AO, Ms Kaye Schofield, Dr Caroline Turner, Dr Timothy Lindsey, Ms Karin Fuels, Dr Colin Adam and Mr John Dauth.

The ΑΠ Board will meet next on 4 December 1998 in Canberra.
