I _ ______

FA99 23 July 1998

In Kuala Lumpur today I had great pleasure in conferring an Australian honour on Malaysian businessman, Dato’ Lee Yee Cheong, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Malaysia-Australia Foundation.

Dato’ Lee has been appointed an Honorary Officer (AO) in the Order of Australia.

The award recognises Dato’ Lee’s significant contribution to the development of bilateral relations between Australia and Malaysia.

The award is a measure of the importance that Australia places on the contribution that Dato’ Lee has made to the development of Australia-Malaysia relations. The relationship between our two countries has matured in recent years with two-way trade now in excess of $4.3 billion per annum, with a notable growth in commercial and political ties.

The award also highlights the valuable role the Malaysia-Australia Foundation is playing in building and strengthening student and cultural links between the two nations.

Dato’ Lee’s association with Australia began when he came to study at the University of Adelaide, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hon) degree in 1961. Following a career with the Malaysian National Electricity Board, he joined the private sector

and is now the Chief Executive Officer of a Malaysian engineering company.
