MEDIA RELEASE MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS ALEXANDER DOWNER

FA 58 13 MAY, 1998

AUSTRALIA CONDEMNS SECOND SET OF INDIAN NUCLEAR TESTS

I unreservedly condemn India’s actions in conducting two further nuclear tests today.

Coming so soon after its three tests on 11 May and in the face of near universal condemnation, this is the act of a Government that has the utmost disregard for accepted international norms of behaviour.

India clearly pays no heed to the world opinion on this matter or to the hopes of people everwhere for a world free of nuclear testing. I strongly urge India to cease immediately all further testing. It is time for India to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty without delay and thereby commit itself never to test again.

India’s actions can only exacerbate an already tense situation in its immediate region, and have potentially serious implications for global security. I call on India’s neighbours to exercise the highest degree of restraint in the face of this provocation.

Australia again calls on India to join the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.
