Emergency Aid for Economic Difficulties of

Indonesia (Assistance in Medical Supplies.

Powdered Milk, and Others V

1. On March 27 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to

extend to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia an

emergency grant-in-aid of 3,000 million yen in medical

supplies, and daily necessities including powdered m ilk,

with a view to assisting the socially w e a k . This emergency

aid is based on the talks with Indonesian President Suharto

when Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto recently

visited Indonesia.

2. Indonesia's currency and financial crisis that started

last year depreciated its currency, the rupiah, and the

costs of the chemicals e tc. used in making antibiotics,

antipyretics, analgesics, and vaccines have risen because

90% of them have to be imported. The price of daily

necessities including powdered milk has also risen beyond

the purchasing powder of most of the people.

3. This emergency aid follows the emergency grant-in-aid

(medical supplies) of 1,020 million yen, which was decided

upon on March 6 (Fri).
