NATIONAL AIR INQUIRY-COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

A community workshop will be held in Sydney today (Tues 10 Feb) to discuss the outcomes of the national inquiry into urban air pollution released in November 1997.

The inquiry, which was conducted at the Government's request, by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, concentrated on identifying practical management solutions to minimise

emissions of the six pollutants to which the majority of Australians are exposed. These are lead, sulfujf dioxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and particles.

The inquiry report lists more than 35 recommendations for government, industry and community action. A large number of these recommendations focus on transport and motor vehicle related issues.

The Government is keen to obtain community feedback on the recommendations which have been put forward. This workshop forms part of this process. While the primary focus of the meeting will be on identifying action to be undertaken on a national basis, the Government is

also interested in getting general feedback on the inquiry findings,

The Sydney workshop is being co-hosted for the Government by the NSW Branch of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand(CASANZ), and the Smogbusters Project within the NSW Nature Conservation Council. CASANZ is a non-profit organisation comprising of professionals working in the air quality field. The Smogbusters programme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth and the Conservation Councils, focussing on educating the community on

reducing the impacts of motor vehicles on urban air quality.

The meeting will take place between 4.00 - 6.30pm at the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, Ryedale Road, West Ryde.
