CONSULAR TRAVEL ADVICE - ERITREA

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises that following the heightened tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea which arose in May 1998, all travel to their common border region should be avoided.

Australians are advised that the land border between the two countries is effectively closed. Further, Ethiopian Airlines have suspended their flights between Asmara and Addis Ababa (the only scheduled flights between the two countries). Travel between Ethiopia and Eritera therefore needs to be via third countries.

Australians travelling to Eritrea are encouraged to seek advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra on (02) 6261-1111, or the Australian High Commission in Nairobi, at Riverside Drive (400 meters off Chiromo Road), Nairobi - phone: (254-2) 445034. Australians are strongly urged to register their presence with the Australian High Commission in Nairobi.

Please note this Travel Advice should be read in conjunction with the Travel Advice issued for Ethiopia on 25 May 1998.

NB: While every care has been taken in preparing this Travel Advice, neither the Australian ■ Government nor its agents or employees including any member o f Australia's consular staff abroad, can accept liability for injury, loss or damage arising in respect o f any statement contained therein.
