Consular travel advice: Indonesia

D48 25 May 1998

The Department advises that political tensions in Indonesia have eased and security conditions in Jakarta and elsewhere in the country have improved significantly. The strong recommendation made in the Department’s Consular Travel Advice of 19 May that Australians should not travel to Indonesia until further notice and that Australian residents and visitors in Indonesia should depart as soon as possible, is no longer appropriate for the current situation.

But although conditions in Indonesia are returning to normal, the overall political situation in the country remains fluid. Accordingly, the Department recommends that Australians should consider deferring non-essential travel to Indonesia (except for Bali) for the time being. Australians in Indonesia should keep themselves closely informed of developments and in particular should avoid large gatherings or demonstrations, which have the potential to turn violent without warning.

The situation in Bali has remained relatively calm throughout the crisis and services for tourists are operating normally.

Australians in Indonesia are encouraged to register their presence in the country with the Australian Embassy, which can be contacted by telephone on (62 21) 522 7111 or by fax on (62 21) 522 7101 (embassy website: for information on current developments). Visitors to Bali can contact the Consulate on (62 361) 235092 or by fax on (62 361) 231990. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra can be

contacted on (02) 6261 3305.
