F IR E ONBOARD NAVY TA N K ER IN W ATERS O FF WA

About 11 am local time today a major fire broke out in the machinery spaces on board the

Royal Australian Navy tanker HMAS WESTRALIA conducting trials 8 miles NNW off

Fremantle in the vicinity of Fairway Buoy.

WESTRALIA crew members are currently working to bring the fire in the bilges under

control by flooding the hold with foam.

Four crew members are currently missing with four more being treated onboard for minor

bums, smoke, inhalation and shock. A Medical Officer has been embarked to assist the

injured crew.

The Royal Australian Navy Community Organisation is currently contacting the next of kin

and relatives of the missing and injured WESTRALIA*s crew.

Royal Australian Navy ships m tile vicinity have been ordered to assist the vessel with

firefiehtine eouinment and medical sunnnrt.

„ A Navy spokesperson, Commander Alan Johnston, Commanding Officer HMAS Stirling

will be available for media comment shortly.
