For Immediate Release

SENATE INQUIRY INTO jCHILDCARc ru.NL.uNu .u VISIT PENRITH

The Senate’s Community Affairs Reference Committee will be holding a public .

h e a rin 9 a t:

Penrith City Council Civic Centre Located at 601 High Street, Penrith On Wednesday 22 April 1998 Commencing at 9.00am and finishing at 5.00pm

“This is an excellent opportunity for parents to have a chance to tell the Senate Committee exactly how the funding cuts have affected them", said Roger Price MP, Federal Member for Chifley.

Penrith City Council will provide a limited number free childcare on the day to allow parents to attend the hearing.

“The Federal government has cut $820 million from child care over two budgets, including $5.3 million from the electorate of Chifley. This is causing permanent damage to child care services”, said Mr Price.

“I disagree with the Federal Member for Lindsay, Jackie Kelly, when she says that Western Sydney is oversupplied with child care places. I also do not agree with her assertion that the people of Western Sydney are not disadvantaged in terms

of child care. Unlike Jackie, I am aware that the parents of Western Sydney, the families of Western Sydney, are being adversely affected by the Coalition Government’s cuts to child care”.

[refer to Adjournment speech by Jackie Kelly dated 1 April 1998].

“In the local area, for example, centres being run by both Blacktown City Council and Penrith City Council have experienced difficulties, as borne out by their submissions to the Senate Inquiry".

“Many parents can no longer afford child care and are having to reduce the hours

they work. Some parents are having to quit work altogether, reducing family income and making it harder to afford the mortgage, education, health and other costs”,

“The National Association of Community Based Childcare Services have stated that in its survey 73% of parents leaving child care were citing fee increases as the reason".

“An important message to all parents : your attendance is important. Let the Federal Government know the extent of the damage that cuts to Childcare have had on you and your family!", concluded Mr Price. ENDS.
