A ustralian Legal Assistance F orum

22 April 1999

The formation o f a coalition o f legal aid service providers was announced at Wednesday’s National Legal Aid Forum Towards 2010.

The Australian Legal Assistance Forum is a body comprised o f the major legal aid client service deliverers in Australia. These organisations are: 1. National Legal Aid representing the Directors o f all Legal Aid Commissions in Australia and through them those Commissions. 2. The Law Council o f Australia representing Australian lawyers and their State and

Territory representative bodies. 3. Representatives o f Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services 4. The National Association o f Community Legal Centres representing community legal centres throughout Australia.

The Australian Legal Assistance Forum has been established to enable these organisations to consider and address Australian legal assistance issues in a co-operative way and to make recommendations on those issues in a co-ordinated fashion.

The objects o f the Australian Legal Assistance Forum are: 1. To promote cooperation between service providers in the interests o f clients to ensure that the legal needs o f those clients are met with the best and most effective service available to address these individual needs. 2. To regularly disseminate information and promote communication amongst the

service providers on issues o f mutual concern to enhance the ability o f those providers to address client needs. 3. To inform governments and other organisations on the needs o f those clients and on issues relevant to the practical delivery o f legal assistance and representation

services.

4. To assist governments and other organisations in the development o f polities to enhance access to justice for all Australians.
