BLACK DAY FOR THE NT ENVIRONMENT

New environmental legislation passed by the Howard Government yesterday will seriously undermine Australia's international reputation - and damage global respect for joint management practices in Kakadu and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta national parks, Member for the Northern Territory, Warren Snowdon, said today.

Mr Snowdon said the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Bill failed to reflect the interests and legal rights of Australia's indigenous people and threatened public access to national parks.

“This Bill is the sad culmination of an unholy alliance between the Democrats and the Coalition," he said.

“It will have a significant impact on the legal and social interests of both indigenous and non-indigenous Australians and could result in the traditional owners of our national parks terminating public access to the parks."

Mr Snowdon said the Prime Minister's divisive policies would result in greater uncertainty and heightened conflict across the nation - precisely the situation Mr Howard says he aims to avoid.

‘This Bill and its amendments severely damage the legal rights and entitlements of Aboriginal Australians and fails to provide structures for appropriate consultation in decision-making processes," he said.

“The Government and their new Coalition partners - the Democrats - have wound back the clock on environmental legislation - and I am appalled they could do so without _ adequate consultation with members of the community."
