GST help is only a phone call away! A new Government-funded helpline for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) run by the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants (ASCPA) opens today.

Endorsing the service, Chairman of The New Tax System Advisory Board, Chris Jordan urged small and medium businesses Australia-wide to use the service to access basic GST information on business skills, practices and processes necessary to become GST-ready.

“The Helpline is funded from a $40 million program administered by the GST Start-Up Assistance Office and focuses on business skills education.

“The Helpline will make it easy for business people to access information about how to adjust their business processes for the GST,” Mr Jordan said.

David Edwards, ASCPA Executive Director said the Australian Society of CPAs is delighted to be managing this essential service to assist SMEs make a smooth transition to the GST.

“There has been a strong need for accessible, credible and timely information on the GST for this sector. The Helpline will go a long way towards meeting this need.

“CPAs are the first port of call for many businesses seeking GST services and advice. We are very pleased to be able to use our expertise in assisting the Government deliver this service,” Mr Edwards said.

The GST Business Assist Helpline will be open every day from 9am to 9pm Australia-wide, for the cost of a local call on 13 30 88.

In addition, a translator interpreter service will soon become available.

The service complements the Business Tax Reform Infoline 13 24 78 which will continue to respond to technical or compliance inquiries.
