Committee to Hold First Hearing into AQIS Decision on Importation of Salmon Products Into Australia

The Senate Rural & Regional Affairs & Transport Legislation Committee, [Chairman, Senator Winston Crane, (LIB, WA)], will be holding its first public hearing tomorrow Friday, 24 September 1999 to take evidence on its inquiry into the matters raised by the decision made by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service in July 1999 to allow the importation of salmon products into Australia.

The terms of reference for the inquiry are -

The effectiveness of the legal and regulatory regimes governing ifcv Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) and the need to ensure transparency, consistency, scientific rigour and the highest standards of protection of the environment, the local fish population and the fishing and recreational fishing industries of Australia, having regard,

in particular, to the administrative procedures and decision-making processes involved in the recent AQIS decision to allow the importation of salmon products into Australia.

The Committee is to hold further hearings on the reference on 1 October (Melbourne) and in Hobart (5 & 6 October). The Committee is to make its report on the reference by the last sitting day of the Senate in October 1999.

The public hearing will take place in Meeting Room 2S3, Parliament House, Canberra commencing at 8:30 am and concluding at 4:15 pm.
