At its 20th Anniversary' Conference in Longreach, Queensland, the NFF Council unanimously endorsed its previous position on the introduction of a broad based consumption tax.

The Chairman of NFF’s Economic Committee, Brendan Stewart, said NFF had supported the introduction of a broad based consumption tax for the last 10 years.

“Today, NFF cemented its policy, which calls for the GST to be applied across a wide base, including food”, Mr Stewart said.

“The Prime Minister has told NFF this morning that he was committed to the retention of benefits for the rural sector contained within the package. Farm families will benefit from savings amounting to around $1 billion from measures in the package, and it is urgent that the package in full be passed by the Senate”, he said.

“This must include the Government’s proposed reductions in the diesel fuel excise, which will have enormous benefits to country Australia, estimated by the Prime Minister this morning to be worth around $3 and a half billion”.

“NFF will communicate today’s decision re-iterating its continued support for the tax package to Federal Cabinet, which is also meeting in Longreach today”.
