SALUTING THEIR SERVICE WITH SUPPORT FOR 55 NEW PROJECTS

Communities across Australia will benefit from funding announced today by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, towards initiatives commemorating Australia’s wartime heritage.

Mr Snowdon announced Saluting Their Service grants worth $112,833 would fund 55 projects including veteran reunions, the restoration of memorials and installation of flag poles for commemorative occasions.

“Commemorative projects play a significant role in ensuring our wartime history is captured and preserved for future generations,” Mr Snowdon said.

The Saluting Their Service grants program provides funding for projects that preserve and display wartime memorabilia, educate, and raise community awareness of Australia’s wartime heritage and enable communities to refurbish, update and construct war memorials, honour boards and plaques.

The program also assists with funding for significant anniversaries, which this year includes the 70th anniversaries of Australia’s actions in the Second World War in Milne Bay, Kokoda and at El Alamein.

Mr Snowdon encouraged community and ex-service organisations to apply for funding to support commemorative initiatives in their local areas.

Through the Saluting Their Service grants program, more than $8.96 million has been approved since 2008 to support more than 2,170 commemorative projects across the country.

“Australian service has been a part of the history of every city and town across the country,” Mr Snowdon said. “These projects ensure the contribution of Australian service personnel is honoured and their sacrifice is never forgotten.”

Those interested in applying for funding should visit www.dva.gov.au/grants or contact their nearest DVA office on 133 254 (for metropolitan callers) or 1800 555 254 (for non-metropolitan callers).

Editor’s note: A list of grant recipients is attached.
