Government enters final consultation phase on firearm importation rules

26 October 2012

Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare today released an updated consultation paper on the rules governing the importation of firearms for legitimate purposes.

The release of this paper follows a meeting of the Commonwealth Firearms Advisory Council at Parliament House earlier this week.

“Firearms are imported for a range of legal purposes including for use by licensed shooters, Police forces and the Australian Defence Force,” Mr Clare said.

“It’s important to always distinguish between legitimate firearms use and criminals who would use firearms for illegal purposes.”

The regulations, which are technical in nature, are designed to ensure firearms can be imported securely and efficiently for legitimate purposes.

Mr Clare thanked stakeholders for their input to date and encouraged interested parties to make final submissions in the coming weeks.

The consultation paper is available at http://www.ag.gov.au/Consultationsreformsandreviews/ and the closing date for submissions is 14 December 2012.
