BUDGET SECURES TOURIST ACCESS TO TABLE CAPE LIGHTHOUSE The Hon Martin Ferguson MP, Minister for Tourism and Sid Sidebottom, Member for Braddon have announced Budget funding of $185,000 to the upgrade of the Table Cape Lighthouse, ensuring tourism access to the lighthouse will become a reality under the Rudd Government.

Mr Ferguson said: "Waratah-Wynyard Council has been working on this important community and regional project for many years.

"The Council has been working to secure access to the Table Cape Lighthouse, the area's most visible and prominent icon, to allow inspection tours by the public.

"Table Cape offers unrivalled views along the North West Coast and inland.

"It is already a popular tourist destination and this project will greatly add to the region, where tourism already makes a significant contribution to the local economy, its future security, and jobs," he said.

Sid Sidebottom said: "The project has reached a stage where a preferred commercial partner has been identified to deliver this service and negotiations are well underway with the owners and lessees to obtain an access licence.

"Council has also completed the plans to modify the building to meet the regulatory standards for public access and this project will build upon existing tourist initiatives within the Waratah-Wynyard Municipality including the Wonders of Wynward Exhibition Centre.

"It is also designed to provide additional attractions for the North West Coast to build upon our Government's policy to bring more visitors to the region through the Spirit of Tasmania.

"This project will deliver increased social and economic outcomes for the region by encouraging greater tourist visitation," he said.
