Reminder to farmers to apply for greenhouse gas reduction funding 22 July 2008 DAFF 08/088B

Farmers keen to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost sustainable management of their properties can still apply for a share of $25 million in funding under the new Caring for our Country initiative.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said applications were open for the Open Grants funding round until 1 August 2008.

Regional and farming groups are encouraged to apply for grants of between $80,000 and $400,000 for projects including promoting sustainable farming practices and helping industries adapt to a changing climate.

Projects could range from reducing farm greenhouse gas emissions and managing organic waste to improving water quality and tackling salinity and weeds.

The Open Grants program will complement the Australian Government’s work on reducing Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions through the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. Projects must meet key criteria under the Caring for our Country initiative including:

• protect the nation’s biodiversity;

• improve water quality of critical aquatic habitats;

• increase take-up of sustainable farming practices;

• address environmental and sustainable land management outcomes in remote and northern Australia;

• improve the national reserve system; and

• improve community skills, knowledge and engagement.

The five-year $2.25 billion Caring for our Country initiative represents a new, coordinated approach to environmental management in Australia, built on a set of consistent national targets.
