M e d i a R e l e a s e THE HON. WARREN SNOWDON MP Federal Member for Lingiari 15th October 2008 MORE THAN 20,000 TERRITORY CHILDREN TO BENEFIT The Federal Member for Lingiari, the Hon. Warren Snowdon MP, said at least 9,963 families across the wider Territory will benefit from the immediate financial support delivered in the Rudd Government’s Economic Security Strategy. Families who receive Family Tax Benefit (A) or have dependent children who receive Youth Allowance, Abstudy or a benefit from the Veterans Children’s Education Scheme payment will receive a one-off payment of $1,000 for each eligible child, to be paid from 8 December. “In Lingiari 9,963 families caring for 20,225 children receive Family Tax Benefit (A). “That’s a big boost for Territory families trying to make ends meet in the face of the steeply rising cost of remote living and a global financial crisis,” said Mr Snowdon. Across Australia around 3.9 million children and three quarters of all families with dependent children will be eligible for assistance. “This is about delivering for the people in our community who need it most.” This decisive action is part of the Rudd Government’s $10.4 billion Economic Security Strategy to strengthen the Australian economy and support families during the global financial crisis. The global financial crisis is placing increasing pressure on family budgets already stretched by the rising cost of living. The Rudd Government is taking decisive action to strengthen the Australian economy. “Working families are the driving force of our economy, and our kids are our future. “This is an investment in our national economy - and in our local communities, from the Tiwis to the Tanami,” said Mr Snowdon.
