APPOINTMENT OF A JUDGE OF THE FEDERAL COURT OF AUSTRALIA

The Attorney-General, Michael Lavarch, today announced the appointment of Catherine Margaret Branson as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia. Justice Branson will take up her appointment immediately.

Justice Branson has practised in a variety of fields of the law, including teaching at the Law School of the University of Adelaide and legal aid work in the USA. After a period in private practice as a solicitor in Adelaide she joined the South Australian Attorney- General’s Department in 1977.

In 1984, Justice Branson became the first woman to head a Government Department in South Australia, when she was appointed to the joint positions of Crown Solicitor and Chief Executive Officer of the Attorney-General’s Department. In 1989 she returned to private practice as a barrister at the independent bar and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1992. Her practice at the bar has been diverse, including first instance and appellate work in the

areas of commercial and banking law, administrative law and equal opportunity law.

Justice Branson has a wide range of community interests and currently serves as a council member of the University of South Australia, a member of the Board of Examiners of the Supreme Court of South Australia and a councillor of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration. She has also been a member of the Faculty of Law at the University of Adelaide (1989-93), Deputy Chairperson of the Adelaide Medical Centre for Women and

Children (1989-90) and a member of the South Australian Child Protection Council (1987­ 88).

“Justice Branson’s appointment will provide a much needed increase injudicial resources to the people of South Australia,” Mr Lavarch said.
