National Youth Week 2008 Talent Competition Winners

A passionate writer, an aspiring graphic designer and a band of 15 year-old musicians are among the National

Youth Week Talent Competition winners announced today by the Minister for Youth, Kate Ellis.

Ms Ellis said the competition showcased the best creative work from talented emerging writers, film makers,

photographers, designers and unsigned musicians.

The Industry Awards and People's Choice Award winners were chosen from the five talent competitions -

RockIT (music), WriteIT (short stories), ShootIT (film), DesignIT (graphic design) and SnapIT (photography).

"Congratulations to all the hundreds of entrants from across the country, particularly the winners who

emerged from the extremely tough selection process. I’m convinced this year’s competition could have

unearthed the next Scott Hicks or Silverchair,” Ms Ellis said.

Each category was divided into two age sub-categories, Junior 12-17 years, and Senior 18-25 years, to ensure

people were competing against entrants of a similar age.

"The Industry Awards were selected by an expert in the creative field for each competition, showing these

young Australians really have what it takes to make a name for themselves in their chosen industry,” Ms Ellis

said.

"The exciting Industry prizes include a $5000 music voucher, a $5000 computer package and

cinematography and photography packages.

"People from around Australia were also given the opportunity to vote for their favourites, with an amazing

total of 19,000 votes registered. All People's Choice winners will receive a Sony HandyCam.

"Yet again, these talent competitions have shown the flair for creative endeavours our young Australians have,

and I thank the industry representatives, sponsors and the public who voted for supporting these

competitions," Ms Ellis said.

National Youth Week is the nation’s biggest annual youth event, designed to celebrate all young people aged

12 - 25, their achievements, skills, talents and the contribution they make to their communities.
