TIME FOR ACTION ON REGIONAL TRANSPORT LINKS

Money must be found to spend on rail to ensure that Illawarra freight and passenger services are maintained and improved Cunningham MP Michael Organ told Federal parliament this afternoon.

“At the end of the day, the people of Australia expect government - whether it be local, state or federal - to take care of basic services such as road and rail”, Mr. Organ said.

“I was told about the rather grim state of the Illawarra and South Coast rail system at a meeting of the Illawarra Commuters Association last weekend, and that comes on top of recent debate over the state of the roads serving our region - such as the now closed Lawrence Hargrave Drive, the Princes Highway and Main Road 92.”

“The Federal government talks of using the Auslink initiative to help support such strategic regional infrastructure upgrades, but we need more than talk.”

“We need action. We need initiatives. We need spending.”

“At the end of the day, the people of Australia expect government - whether it be local, state or federal - to take care of basic services such as road and rail”, Mr. Organ said.
