TRUCKING INDUSTRY ON THE ROAD TO A CLEAN ENERGY FUTURE

Transforce Bulk Haulage has become the first carbon neutral trucking company in Australia to be endorsed under the National Carbon Offset Standard.

The Dubbo trucking company now accounts for all of its carbon emissions from a fleet of 11 trucks including single trailers, B-doubles and road trains.

“Transforce has reduced its carbon pollution by 250 tonnes a year and offset its remaining emissions. This is a first for Australia’s trucking industry,” said Mark Dreyfus, Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

“The company has voluntarily upgraded its vehicles with lower emissions engine technology, sources energy from GreenPower, buys carbon offsets and rewards drivers who use less fuel through improved driving techniques.”

Mr Dreyfus will present Transforce’s owner Steve Fieldus with an award today, under the Government’s voluntary Carbon Neutral Program, at the national Carbon Farming Conference and Expo in Dubbo.

“Transforce Bulk Haulage is taking the lead and showing that reforms aimed at energy efficiency and sustainability can be applied to great effect in the transport industry,” he said.

The transport sector contributes about 15% to Australia’s total emissions each year.

"A clean energy future is a necessary reform to maintain a competitive economy, protect our environment and do the right thing for our children and future generations.”

The Carbon Neutral Program includes corporate leaders such as Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Qantas, ANZ and NAB. The combined efforts of carbon neutral participants have resulted in more than 1 million tonnes of carbon pollution being avoided each year.

**Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Mark Dreyfus, will deliver the keynote address at 11.30am today at the Carbon Farming Conference 2012, Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre, 155 Darling St Dubbo.**

Background information

Low Carbon Australia

The Carbon Neutral Program is a voluntary scheme which allows Australian businesses to measure, reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions associated with business operations or products.

Organisations seeking to voluntarily offset their emissions or become carbon neutral under the program are able to purchase carbon offsets from a list of eligible offset units under the National Carbon Offset Standard.

The Program is administered by Low Carbon Australia on behalf of the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

Low Carbon Australia was set up by the Australian Government in 2010 as a company limited by guarantee with an independent board of directors.
