Border Protection Command assists vessel

23 September 2012

Yesterday the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Rescue Coordination Centre (AMSA RCC) coordinated a search and rescue operation of a vessel requiring assistance approximately 45 nautical miles south of the Sunda Strait.

Following a broadcast to shipping issued by the AMSA RCC two merchant vessels, MV Pinnacle Bliss and MV Devon Express, arrived on scene and located the vessel.

HMAS Larrakia arrived on scene yesterday afternoon and coordinated the transfer of people from the vessel requiring assistance to the MV Pinnacle Bliss.

Passengers were transferred to MV Pinnacle Bliss due to the unseaworthy nature of the vessel, which had sustained a damaged hull and engine trouble.

Initial reports are that 169 people were onboard.

MV Pinnacle Bliss is transferring the passengers to Christmas Island, where they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established.

People arriving by boat without a visa after 13 August 2012 run the risk of transfer to a regional processing country.
