Hon Frank Walker QC MP · Minister for Administrative Services

MEDIA RELEASE

NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL POLICE

Construction of a new headquarters building for the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in Barton took a step forward today when the Minister for Administrative Services, Mr Frank Walker, referred the project to the Parliamentary Public Works Committee.

“Subject to the normal review process of the Public Works Committee, building should start in February 1997 and be completed in August 1998,” Mr Walker said.

The new 6-storey office building will be located on the Hinkler Building site in Barton.

It will bring all the AFP’s functions together under one roof. Currently they are housed at five different locations around Canberra.

“The move will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the AFP as well as bringing it closer to other Commonwealth agencies responsible for the administration of justice,” Mr Walker said.

The new building is expected to cost about $39 million.
