Prime Minister more important than "death tax"

23RD July, 2012

The Transport Workers Union should give the $200,000 it has set aside for the next election to the coalition, according to Nationals Senator for New South Wales John Williams.

The Gillard Labor government will introduce a further $510 million per year diesel tax on our truckies from July 1, 2014, and if TWU National Secretary Tony Sheldon is serious about defending the transport industry, his union should help fund the election campaign for the coalition.

Senator Williams said an Abbott/Truss government is the only way to prevent this monster fuel tax grab on our truckies ever occurring.

Mr. Sheldon appeared before a Senate inquiry 12 months ago and described the carbon tax, introduced by the Gillard government, as a "death tax" for truckies because of the extra cost pressures it would place on them.

"He was right. The transport industry was hit with a 2.4 cents a litre increase in their effective fuel tax from the 1st of July this year which will cost it $166 million and adds to the cost pressures.

"At the time he made the comments the industry applauded Mr. Sheldon for being so forthright.

That now seems to have changed because twelve months later he is standing side by side with the person who has introduced the "death tax" without holding her to account.

“Mr Sheldon and the Transport Workers Union should get behind the side of politics that actually supports the truckies of our nation, the coalition of the Liberals and Nationals, not the Labor/Greens/Independent alliance”, Senator Williams said.
