ANSWERS NEEDED ON PAY INCREASE FOR COMMUNITY WORKERS

Julia Gillard must explain to the Australian people how her Government intends to fund its latest billion dollar unfunded commitment to a pay increase for low paid social and community sector workers.

The Coalition supports a pay increase for these workers, but Julia Gillard and Wayne Swan must answer questions about how they will pay for the rise and still achieve a Budget surplus in 2012-13.

Furthermore, Julia Gillard used her speech to the NSW ALP Conference to claim that the Federal Budget is in surplus:

“This year’s Budget, a surplus Budget, with the lowest Budget spending forecast in thirty years, following a year in which business investment reached a fifteen-year peak - was called a plan for ‘class warfare’.” Source: Julia Gillard speech to NSW ALP Conference, 15 July 2012 (emphasis added)

This Labor Government has never delivered a surplus Budget. Wayne Swan’s 2012-13 Budget is not a surplus Budget, only the promise of one, and the final Budget outcome will not be known until September 2013.

This is yet another example of why Labor cannot be trusted.
