Men’s Olympic Volleyball team named for London

The Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Sports Minister Kate Lundy today congratulated the Australian Men’s Olympic Volleyball team on qualifying for the 2012 London Games.

The 12 players selected to represent Australia and compete at the 2012 London Games were named this morning at an event at Parliament House in Canberra.

Our Australian Volleyball squad recently defied the odds to qualify for the Games, going into the Asian qualifying tournament in Tokyo as the lowest ranked team. Requiring a top-two finish to qualify for London, the Aussies sealed their place with a straight-sets win over China in their last match to finish second in the tournament.

“In 30 days our Aussie men’s volleyball team will be participating in the opening ceremony of the London Olympics, a reward for their years of hard work,” Senator Lundy said.

“Australians love the Olympics and I have a feeling the indoor volleyball team will be one of the great Olympic stories of London.

“Before qualifying they were the quintessential underdogs - ranked last among the eight countries vying for a spot.

Defying the odds, our men’s team pulled off a terrific straight-set win at the qualifying tournament to land a place at the Games and keep their Olympic hopes alive.

“Australians around the country are rightly proud of the feats of our men’s volleyball team and will be cheering them on as they strive for Olympic glory in London.

“The Men’s Indoor Volleyball will be held in Earls Court and I have no doubt the Australian Olympic team will feel right at home at this venue.”

Head Coach of the men’s indoor volleyball team, Jon Uriarte, a former Argentinian international, will be coaching against his son Nicholas when Australia meets Argentina in the first round at the London Games.

The Australian Government is a proud supporter of volleyball providing over $2.6 million in 2011-12 for high performance sport. The Federal Government will spend more than $100 million this financial year alone to assist Olympic and Paralympic sports.
