THE HON BRUCE BILLSON MP  Shadow Minister for Small Business, Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs Federal Member for Dunkley

Media Release - Tuesday 26 June 2012

Govt should stop threatening small business

The Gillard Government should stop threatening small businesses who need to educate consumers of the impact of the carbon tax on their prices, according to the Coalition.

Shadow Small Business Minister Bruce Billson said the Gillard Government was trying to scare small business with fines of $1.1 million so they don’t even talk about the carbon tax.

The call from the Coalition comes after Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury threatened to send the ACCC after businesses who display Coalition fliers which simply explain to consumers the impact of the carbon tax on small business.

“This is just another example of the Gillard Government trying to intimidate small business to not pass on or talk about the impact of the carbon tax,” Mr Billson said.

“The fliers do nothing more than explain the Government own modelling and policy.

“The Coalition has had to do the work the Government should be doing in informing consumers that small businesses face higher operating and input costs under the world’s largest carbon tax that can legitimately, and in many case necessarily, be passed on in the form of higher prices.

“Just because the Government knows it’s taking a hit in the polls because of the carbon tax doesn’t mean it can bully small business into not passing on the carbon tax cost to maintain their viability and capacity to employ.

“It’s high time the Government realised that small business is the meat in the carbon tax sandwich with no direct compensation for the sector.”

Mr Billson said the best way to restore hope, reward and opportunity to small business is to abolish the carbon tax.     Kane Silom | Media Adviser | Office of the Hon Bruce Billson MP   Federal Member for Dunkley   Shadow Minister for Small Business, Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs  Frankston    P: 03 9781 2333  F: 03 9783 7912   Canberra     P: 02 6277 4257  F: 02 6277 8516  Mobile P: 0458 550 506  : Positive : Passionate : Persistent
